Bannie’s journey towards bartending started unexpectedly. A Hotel Management graduate from Jinju Health College in Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea, Bannie stumbled across an opportunity to move to Singapore to immerse herself in the local culture and learn English. She discovered her passion for bartending at her first job as a waitress in City Space in 2010, and returned to Seoul to pursue bartending courses at the renowned Johnnie Walker Academy and Korean International Bartending Academy. Upon completion of the courses, she continued to work at City Space with hands-on training to be a bartender, before joining the Craftsman team of Anti:dote in 2013.
Within a short span of one year into bartending, Bannie clinched the title of first runner-up at the National Cocktail competition organized by the Association of Bartenders and Sommeliers Singapore in 2012. Representing Anti:dote, Bannie was a finalist at the 6th Diageo Reserve World Class 2013 competition and the only female bartender to make it to the Top 3 in Diageo Reserve World Class Singapore finals in 2014. Bannie went on to claim the title of Best Female Bartender at the Bar Awards Singapore for two consecutive years in 2014 and 2015. She made it to the Top 8 of the Diplomático World Tournament in 2014, and earned the title of first runner-up at the same Diplomático World Tournament in 2017.

Most recently, Bannie emerged winner of Black Cow Vodka Gold Top Cup 2018. Prior to this, she joined a panel of highly acclaimed industry judges for Bacardi Legacy 2017, having clinched the championship title at the 2016 Bacardi Legacy Global Competition, where she represented Singapore in the global finals held in San Francisco. In March 2017, Bannie participated in the Asian debut of international female bartending competition Speed Rack, which saw her in the finals competing against seven other of the region’s best female bartenders.
Growing up in a family that instills strong values for a healthy and balanced diet, Bannie often crafts her cocktails with medicinal and social purposes in mind. She draws inspiration from her native origin, incorporating ingredients commonly found in traditional Korean dishes, such as white kimchi, Korean plum liqueur and ginseng. Back in her hometown, Jinju, South Korea, Bannie also likes following her family to harvest pressed Sakura flowers, plums and yuzu, often found growing in her backyard. She incorporates these freshly picked ingredients to make Korean spices and pastes, such as homemade marmalade, which she largely infuses in her cocktails.
As a keen food lover, Bannie also enjoys heading to the local markets during her free time to experience the culture. She gathers inspiration from exploring the different food elements and components used widely in local dishes. Some of her current favourites include tropical fruits like watermelon and pineapple, which she used most recently in her winning cocktail “Hwa Chae” that was presented at the 2016 Bacardi Legacy Global Competition.
Constantly seeking new cocktail knowledge and techniques, Bannie’s strong determination and independence has certainly taken her to greater heights and reinforced her status as an exceptional and innovative bartender in this male-dominated industry. She looks forward to constantly experimenting and mastering her cocktail making skills, and presenting more of her creations with the marriage of Western and Southeast Asian influences.
